Concentrate on early-season rifle and archery opportunities throughout Northeast Washington, specifically Game Management Units 109 (Threeforks), 113 (Selkirk), 117 (49 Degrees North) and 121 (Huckleberry).
Selkirk offers the most public land (mostly Colville National Forest), but it's more heavily forested than the surrounding farmland units. The other units are defined by private farmlands and tougher access.
"I think there are real good numbers
of relatively young bucks in the
2- and 3-year-old range," Zender said.
"You won't find great numbers of the
big, trophy, older-age-class bucks,
but if you're satisfied with just taking
a buck, early season is good for
taking young deer. Success rates
are good early."
"Late season is certainly better for older bucks, because of a combination of rut and weather. The rut is the major difference. You have bucks coming out in sight in the day when they're usually nocturnal."
